Starting Fresh

Starting Fresh

Now that December 51st, 2020 has passed, we can finally put last year to bed. We have seen some dark times and we know still have some tough times ahead, but we have some reason to look for brightness as we look forward. It’s time to start fresh, and time to begin the year.

Citrus is the aromatherapy scent for optimism. Nearly every member of the citrus family is a “mood brightener” that provides a fresh and invigorating experience.

One of my favorite citrus fruits is the blood orange. About 3 years ago I planted a blood orange tree in my backyard. I have been watering it, taking care of it, hoping, and waiting for what came early this year: Blood Oranges. My tree produced: about 24 beautiful citrus fruits.

I have always associated the beginning of the year with freshness and citrus. 72 Cookies has had a booth at the Sherman Oaks Farmers Market since election day last year and January 5th was the first time we offered the citrus at the market in the form of  Lemon tarts (club members will remember the Lemon Bars from last summer, we just made them in a 4 inch “socially distant” tart form.)

But then the oranges were ready. I started with the mini Blood orange bread cakes, but with the popularity of the Rum Cakes over Christmas, I had another idea.

I decided to start this new season with the Blood Orange Harvey Wall Banger. Much like the drink, the mini cake is made with Vodka, Galliano, and my very own Hollywood Blood Orange Juice.

I am excited for what this year brings, and I am so grateful for you, and I can’t wait to hear what you think. Share your stories on Instagram @72_cookies
